I.E.S. César Manrique is a state secondary school which holds about 600 students and a staff of 50 teachers. It is located in Arrecife, the capital city of Lanzarote. It was opened in 1990 and since 1997 has been the only secondary school in the city adapted to take in physically disabled students, as the school has nursing assisstants and the necessary equipment. This school offers four years of compulsory secondary education (12-16 years old) and two years of post-compulsory education aimed at preparing students for the university entrance exam.
There is also a wide range of programmes being carried out in order to offer students holistic education: the CLIL programme, the Solidarity Commitee, the Ecological Garden, the Debate Club, the Sustainable Committe and the Mediation programme. Promoting culture has a relevant place in our school philosophy. Students attend exhibitions, guided routes, plays, and musical performances. They are encouraged to take part in our Cultural Week, our Music festivals, our Sport events and the Canarian Day. Fostering values is another priority so students are engaged in activities on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Peace Day and the Sustainability Day.
Besides, our school is also participating in two Erasmus+ KA02 projects: P.O.C.K.E.T. Tools (2016-2018), to improve students’ academic achievement and IMiS (2017-2018) to work on the internationalization management of our school. Previously, we pariticipated in an Erasmus+ KA01 project with other secondary schools on the island to do training and jobshadowing activities in the field of CLIL in different European countries.
The schools takes its name after our world-wide known artist César Manrique Cabrera. All his works are imbued with the artistic principles he held most dear: respectful dialogue between art and the natural medium and between local architectural values and modern conceits. It is impossible to imagine Lanzarote as it stands today without César Manrique.
With the Polish partner school we also worked on the topic of walls during this project in the German lessons.
